How do I use passkeys?

Learn how to use passkeys to secure your account.

What are passkeys?

A passkey is a modern, secure way to log into your online accounts without needing to remember or type in a password. Instead of relying on traditional passwords, passkeys use advanced cryptographic methods to provide a seamless and highly secure authentication experience. When you set up a passkey, it typically uses biometric data like your fingerprint or facial recognition, or a trusted device such as your smartphone, to verify your identity. This not only makes logging in faster and easier but also significantly reduces the risk of your account being hacked, since there's no password to steal or guess. Passkeys are designed to enhance your online security while making your digital life more convenient.

How do I set one up?

  1. Ensure your device supports passkeys. Most modern smartphones, tablets, and computers are compatible with passkeys, but you may need to enable the feature in your device's settings.
  2. If you're on a modern device running Android 9.0+, iOS 16+, Windows 11+ or macOS Ventura+, chances are passkeys are already available to you and enabled by default.

  3. Log into the Horizon Dashboard.
  4. Navigate to the "Settings" page in the navigation bar.
  5. Click on "Security & Privacy".
  6. Under "Passkeys", enter a friendly name to identify your passkey.
  7. Make sure to choose a name that you can easily recognize, such as "My Phone" or "My Laptop".

  8. Click "Add Passkey" and follow the on-screen instructions to set up your passkey.
  9. It helps to use a password manager to easily sync your passkeys across devices. On Apple, passkeys are stored in iCloud Keychain, while on Android, they are stored in Google Password Manager. Great cross-platform password managers are Bitwarden, which is free and open-source, and 1Password, which is a reputable but premium option.
